Thinking About Entering a Field Trial? Here’s What It’s All About…

With entries now open for our next Field Trial on 14 January at Bagots Park, Staffordshire, we thought it would be helpful to explain a bit more about what a minority breeds trial involves—especially for those who haven’t entered before or who are thinking about giving it a go.
A Minority Breeds Field Trial is a fantastic opportunity for owners of our minority breeds—like Clumber Spaniels, Spanish Water Dogs, Field Spaniels, Welsh Springer Spaniels and others—to showcase their dogs’ natural working ability in a friendly and supportive setting.
If you’re considering entering, here’s what to expect:
• A Real Day’s Shooting, Judged Fairly – Dogs are assessed on hunting, game-finding, style, retrieving, steadiness and all-round usefulness in the shooting field. If you already take your dog picking-up or beating, they’re likely doing many of these jobs already—so a trial can be a natural next step and a great way to showcase the work they’re used to doing.
• A Smaller, Welcoming Entry – Because it’s restricted to minority breeds, the atmosphere is relaxed, encouraging and ideal for newcomers.
• Supportive Judges & Fellow Competitors – Even if you are new to trialling, you’ll find the environment helpful, constructive, and geared to bringing the best out of your dog.
• A Great Learning Experience – Whether you win, place or simply enjoy the day, you’ll come away with valuable insight into your dog’s abilities and what to work on next.
• A Celebration of Working Heritage – These trials help preserve and promote the traditional working qualities of our minority breeds.
If you’re thinking about entering—or even just curious—please feel free to get in touch with Anna, Gary or Julian from the Field Trial Sub Committee. We’re more than happy to answer any questions and help you get started.
Why not take the plunge? You and your dog might surprise yourselves!
